What do I know about Mexico? If you’ve never been – as I hadn’t – then I expect I knew as much as you. Memories of Mexico ‘86 (Maradonna’s “Hand of God”), “Once upon a time in Mexico” by Robert Rodriguez, and a vague notion of ancient Mexican civilisations: the Aztecs and Mayans.

All this and more is why, for as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to visit Mexico.

In my imagination it’s so vibrant and exotic and romantic. An impression left by reading books by old, great authors. Graham Green’s The Power and the Glory, and DH Lawrence’s Mornings in Mexico. Lonely Planet and the Rough Guide helped cement my longing. I didn’t know the ‘reality’ of Mexico, I only knew the stories.

Yes, perhaps it has a reputation of being a lawless narco-state, but that’s part of the adventure – and anyway, stories like that are never the full picture. I gave more weight to the stories told by friends over the years. Truth or fiction, reputation or reality, it doesn’t much matter – stories have power. To entice and ensnare the mind, and to move people to action. So it was that I made my travel plans. I was going to Mexico.

Mexico calling

Being a business owner makes Christmas the ideal time for my annual holiday. We all-but shut down between Christmas Eve and New Years Day. This way I’m not absent from work for too long – it’s ideal for a trip across an ocean. Mexico had been calling for so long I could no longer ignore it. Why, though? I’ve already said it. Stories.

You see, it’s stories that drive us. As human-beings we’re hardwired to listen to storytellers, and to build worlds of imagination based on words alone. That’s why we respond to reviews, recommendations and testimonials. That’s why stories matter for your branding.

Tell your stories

Because if you tell someone your story, and show why you do what you do, they’ll respond positively. They’ll relate to you emotionally, and that’s a good thing. It’s the “why” that people buy, not the “what”. And it was the recommendations – really the anecdotes from my friends – that made me fall in love with Mexico. That was long before I visited, but visit I did. Because I wanted some new stories of my own.

We’ve helped many businesses tell their brand stories – through words, videos and client testimonials. Getting your brand right is key to everything else. Want to see what we can do for you?
