As we come up to the end of the year, many of us are starting to plan for 2017, thinking about the people we need in our businesses to make our plans reality. We know what we aim to achieve and which people we need in our businesses to achieve it, but the biggest threat to us all right now is the war for talent. It doesn’t matter how great your product or service is, without the right people in your organisation, you may well be destined for failure.

So…

How do we attract the right calibre of people to work in our businesses?

Are we relying too heavily on recruitment agencies to sell in our opportunities?

Recruiters can only do so much. If they are offering two or three roles to a great candidate, that candidate will do their research online (particularly millennials) and make judgements about your business very quickly, rightly or wrongly so.

That candidate will look at the website and social channels of each business and prioritise which one they favour based on what they see. So your brand (your shop window) will have a huge bearing on the candidate’s preferences. We work with companies every day to build their Employer Brands which help attract and retain the right people.

A poor quality brand will draw in poor quality applicants and vice versa, a great brand will attract great candidates. Your Employment Brand forms the foundation for an effective recruiting strategy and can make a significant difference in winning the war for talent. A strong employer brand aligns with your business, culture and reputation. It gives job seekers and candidates a realistic and authentic preview of working at your company.

69% of people are likely to apply to a job if the employer actively manages its employer brand. (e.g., responds to reviews, updates their profile, shares updates on the culture and work environment)
