Raising smiles, or eyebrows?
Depending on your point of view this either raises a smile, or an eyebrow. It’s caused some upset. You might think, what were they thinking? What was once meant to be attention-grabbing has instead led to accusations of sexism, and a public relations headache. Was it just supposed to be a bit cheeky?
Speaking of cheek, the ad may have been seen as edgy back in its time, today it’s biting the firm on the ass. Their response, claiming it was created in a different era with different standards, rings hollow. Yes, times change, but those changes don’t absolve you from the consequences of promoting outdated stereotypes.
I like to believe they’ve moved on, so what they should have done is own the mistake, instead of claiming that the controversy over the resurfaced ad is ‘unfortunate’. The real sting in the tail – from a marketing point of voice – is that the ad isn’t just offensive to women, it’s alienating to the very people Outhwaite & Chavda would want to attract as clients. You can read their full response on their website.
